hISTORY

The BSC has inherited the legacy of the well-known European Center for Parallelism in Barcelona (CEPBA). This institution was a center for research, development and innovation in efficient computational technologies for both academia and industry. CEPBA belonged to the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). It was also sponsored by two R&D support organizations: the Spanish CICYT (Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología) and the Catalan CIRIT (Consell Interdepartamental de Recerca i Innovació Tecnològica).

1991

CEPBA started its activity

CEPBA started its activity, gathering the experience and needs of several departments of the UPC. The Department of Computer Architecture (DAC) provided expertise in the lower level of a computer system (numerical cores, OS, tools and architecture).
1995 – 2000

CEPBA coordinated the service activities with CESCA

CEPBA coordinated the service activities with CESCA (Centro de Supercomputación de Catalunya) through the C4 (Centro de Informática y Comunicaciones de Catalunya) founded by CIRIT, the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca and the UPC.
2000

CEPBA signed an agreement with IBM

CEPBA signed an agreement with IBM to launch the CEPBA-IBM Research Center. The objectives of this agreement were to unify research in topics related to Deep Computing and computational architecture, and to support local research in other areas of science and engineering. This Research and Development Alliance between UPC and IBM had an initial commitment of 4 years.
2004

Creation of the National Supercomputing Center in Barcelona

The Ministry of Education, the Generalitat de Catalunya and the UPC took the initiative to create a National Supercomputing Center in Barcelona
2005 – Now

BSC-CNS officially established

The BSC-CNS was officially established and started its activity. The MareNostrum was built as the most powerful machine in Europe.

Visit to BSC and MN5 Supercomputer

The afternoon of June 18th will feature a unique visit to the Supercomputer MareNostrum 5 (MN5) at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC). Participants will have the opportunity to explore the state-of-the-art facilities that house MN5, one of EuroHPC’smost powerful supercomputers. The visit begins with a guided tour of the data center, where the supercomputer is located. Attendees will have the opportunity to see not only the new general purpose and accelerator partitions (Using Saphire and Hopper hardware), but also the new generation partitions based on novel technologies. Attendees will also get a behind-the-scenes look at the infrastructure that supports MN5’s incredible computational capabilities. They will learn about the complex network of servers, storage systems, long term archive and cooling system that enable the supercomputer to perform at peak efficiency.

During the tour, experts from the BSC will explain the various research projects that MN5 powers. The tour will also include a glimpse into the early stages of quantum computing at BSC, showcasing a first version of the Quantum Computer inside the chapel Torre Girona. This section of the visit will offer insights into how quantum technology is expected to revolutionize computational power in the coming years

Throughout the visit, attendees will have the chance to interact with BSC researchers and technical staff, allowing for in-depth discussions about the role of supercomputing in advancing science and technology.
