Training day

June 16, 2025 @ 9:00 am6:00 pm

On the morning of June 16th, we kick off the 19th SPHERIC World Conference with Training Day. This initial session is dedicated to providing a solid foundation in Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) through a series of keynote presentations.

– Lecture 1: An introduction to SPH

– Speaker: Dr. Nathan Quinlan, Galway University

– Bio: Dr. Nathan Quinlan is a senior lecturer at NUI Galway with a background in mechanical engineering, having earned his B.E. and M.Eng.Sc. degrees there and a D.Phil. from Oxford University in 1999. After postdoctoral research in Oxford, he became a lecturer at NUI Galway in 2000 and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2009. His research focuses on fluid dynamics, especially in biological and medical device applications. He has expertise in both experimental and computational techniques, including mesh-free approaches to computational fluid dynamics. Dr. Quinlan has collaborated with medical device companies and received research funding from various sources. He has taught undergraduate courses in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and other engineering subjects and received NUI Galway’s President’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2007.

– Lecture 2: Multi-physics engineering problems in renewable energy: challenges and opportunities with SPH

– Speaker: Dr. Bonaventura Tagliafierro, Uppsala University

– Bio: Bonaventura Tagliafierro is a Researcher in Renewable Energy Systems and Numerical Modeling. Now Marie Skłodowska–Curie Fellow at Uppsala University (Sweden) at the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, advised by Prof. Malin Göteman. Also, from 2022, visiting scholar at Queen’s University Belfast (UK). Completed his doctoral program at the University of Salerno (Italy – 2022), specializing in design of steel structures and numerical methods for structural verification. Has been collaborating with EPhysLab (University of Vigo, Spain) since 2019 as a researcher and has also joined the DualSPHysics code project; since 2023, acts as Wiki Coordinator. Research interests include finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, dynamics of multibody systems, and coupling between fluid and solid mechanics. Code applications involve wave energy converters, floating offshore wind turbine platforms, and steel structures, aiming at investigating performance under extreme events. Formerly, post-doctoral researcher at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (2022–2024, Spain) at the Maritime Engineering Laboratory (LIM); in 2023, was awarded a Fulbright Schuman fellowship to research on the numerical implementation of control systems for offshore wind technology at Simulation Based Engineering Lab (SBEL, UW-Madison, US) using Project Chrono.
